Planning

Although it is always difficult to put a specific monetary value on real time information, it is a vital tool in reassuring passengers and is expected by most travellers at all parts of their journey.

We provide real time information for over 700 stations on national rail, from the largest (such as London Bridge) to small rural stations.  This includes integrating data from a wide range of sources (including TSDB, TRUST, signalling systems, GPS tracking and mass detectors) and delivering it to a wide range of visual and audio channels, not just on the station but also websites, staff handhelds and passengers own mobile devices.  Increasingly travellers expect to get information before their journeys and also on other parts of their journey before joining a train. We recognise the importance of providing comprehensive information across all modes, since many passengers need information about their whole journey and choices available to them, especially in urban areas, supporting the commuter at each step of the journey.

Resourcing

VoyagerPlan is a comprehensive train planning and diagramming tool. Voyagerplan supports the train service planning functions by allowing for the creation of route geography, train specifications and point-to-point timings to produce viable services.

Voyagerplan then enables the resourcing requirements to be built up for these services for both vehicles and train crew in a process known as 'diagramming'. The diagrams produced to cover a given service are then passed to a range of systems to enable actual people and vehicles to be allocated to them on a day by day basis. Train resources (e.g. vehicles and crews) are allocated to particular services as 'diagrams'. The Diagram Capture Module is designed to assist train operators in the planning and compiling of these diagrams.

GENIUS is a resource (vehicle stock, and crew) allocation and management tool providing real-time control of resources to maximise utilisation and delivery of the rail service. It provides a direct interface to resource schedule data produced in VoyagerPlan and incorporates a real-time interface with the RAVERS asset management system.

Crewplan - Comprehensive train crew management package, dealing with the entire rostering process from the creation of the base roster through to the collection of information for payroll.

Maintenance

The Rolling Stock Library system holds base safety/operational data at both vehicle and design level, relating to asset management and vehicle registration.

Rail Vehicle Records System is a system that enables customers to capture, project and inquire on various maintenance events, including major asset maintenance exams, vehicle defects, and repairs and component changes on vehicles.

Multi-Modal Information

As governments and commercial organisations seek to improve the levels of transparency and access travel related services and information using a variety of different modes, be it by road, rail, air or a mix of these, key to this vision will be to offer travellers a number of innovative channels to retrieve, access and pay for travel related products and services, keeping travellers informed at each step of their journey. Atos Origin have a proven record of delivery of solutions which support and cover all aspects of the travellers needs, ranging from scaleable station systems to dynamic web based portals.

Retailing

Transport workers are often mobile and so need to be equipped with the information they need when and where they need it.  There is too much reliance on paper (which is expensive to produce) or obtaining information by calling someone up which involves two people and often does not give the complete information required.

AVANTIX Mobile is a fully integrated and secure retail solution which provides complete national fares and timetables and issues a comprehensive range of magnetically encoded tickets, including Rovers and Season tickets.  It also has a wide range of other functions including penalty fares, passenger counts, non-ticket sales (such as refreshments) and ticket after departure (the issue of tickets booked over the Internet on train).

As well as the PDA and printer we supply all the supporting depot infrastructure including update workstations, docking cradles and battery chargers.  The update workstation manages the daily down load of new national data such as fares and timetables and the upload of captured data such as sales records.  The update workstation also allows the operator to create data which is specific to the operator such as user ids, non-rail products and passenger count locations.

AVANTIX mobile is already chip and PIN accredited and we are also planning the introduction of the reading and update of contact less smartcards.  The latest version of AVANTIX Mobile also has communications links through Wireless LAN or GPRS enabling access to real time information, reservations etc.

Settlement

The Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) contracted with Atos Origin to design, build and operate the UK rail settlement system. The 17 year contract is the largest IT contract ever awarded by Britain's rail industry.

The UK rail settlement system is currently one of the world's largest and most complex settlement systems, and is even larger than any of the settlement systems used by global airlines. The Atos Origin solution is capable of handling and allocating more than £4 billion in annual passenger revenue to Britain's 26 passenger train operators.

The system, code named Lennon (Latest Earnings Networked Nationally Over Night), delivers information from all ticket sales, whether purchased from a ticket vending machine, on a train, via the web or at a ticket office, to all parties within 24 hours, including the train operating companies and Transport for London. Management information is ready by 8am after the day of the sale.

Having captured this valuable sales information, train operating companies are better able to plan rail services to ensure that high levels of customer service are maintained at all times. Furthermore, the information can be used to develop more targeted and timely marketing and retail programs to increase sales.

Transformational IT

The Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) is the UK Government agency responsible for improving road safety and environmental standards. The key mandate of VOSA is to both reduce road and traffic accidents and to reduce the levels of road related theft and crime in the UK. The core processes of the organisation include supervising the MOT scheme, specialised and road side safety checks of both commercial and commuter vehicles. Due to the ever raising and perpetual shifting demands of the road networks throughout the UK, VOSA was finding it increasingly difficult to put in place an outsourcing agreement which could absorb and evolve in line with ever-changing road usage, regulatory and organisational requirements. Existing agreements were viewed as being too rigid and constraining.

With these challenges and demands in mind, Atos Origin was awarded a 9 year outsourcing programme with the fundamental aim to modernise the existing IT infrastructure. A key differentiation of the contract in comparison to other outsourcing arrangements was that the redevelopment of the IT infrastructure was to be financed as an ongoing managed operation, enabling VOSA to plan their IT spend accordingly in line with their needs in real time, providing the flexibility and fluidity such an organisation and partnership agreements requires. Essentially, the agreement resulted in the implementation of a bespoke service offering specific to VOSA´s individual needs.

Due to the flexibility of the deal put in place, this enables both parties involved to focus upon their core services, tasks and responsibilities. All projects are fixed price, therefore Atos Origin must absorb any cost over-runs and delays. Project costs are benchmarked against a pre-defined payment profile, specifically designed so as to penalise late delivery whilst still ensuring that the partnership remains cohesive and stabilised. As the partnership continues to develop and evolve, both parties work in unison towards shared goals and objectives, with both party sharing in the mutually beneficial rewards of the relationship.
